Not too long after the initial skirmish with hostiles, Shepard runs across a fallen comrade's M-100 Grenade Launcher. Take cover as needed, destroy the oncoming opposition, and proceed through green-lit doors to your destination. Shepard is soon attacked by LOKI mechs, which go down after a few direct hits.
Grab the highlighted M-3 Heavy Pistol along with its thermal clip further up and prepare to quickly learn how to use it. She informs him that the ship is in dire straits and that he needs to get moving. Shepard goes through a lapse of consciousness before a voice over the intercom rouses the slumbering and now groggy Shepard. Continuing tailoring Shepard's core personality and character class, and when ready the game begins proper. Construct Commander Shepard's mug to your fancy, but once you exit the Lazarus Project Shepard's look will be final. Now comes the fun part: character customization. Convince him to abandon the Normandy one way or another and watch as the ensuing events unfold. The path to the cockpit is relatively linear and devoid of any immediate threats, so move forward with a purpose toward a frantic Joker. This is a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with moving Shepard around. Shepard forces everyone to evacuate while he braves the hazards of a dying ship to save Joker in the cockpit. The Normandy has suffered fatal damage and will go down at any moment. All is fine on the Normandy at first, but the situation very quickly deteriorates as the Normandy suddenly sustains heavy fire from enemy attack. The opening sequence introduces (or re-introduces) the player to the beloved Normandy and the motley gang commandeering the spaceship. Note that for the sake of consistency, Shepard will be referred to as a male character throughout the guide. This maintains a stream of consistency, but is not necessary to fully enjoy the game.

I would expect more enemies, and tougher enemies than I am encountering.
Since I'm having to actually level this time around for the first time in forever, I set it to normal difficulty. In previous runs through the games I had been maxing my character at the beginning and setting the gameplay to insanity. I think that moment alone can turn me off Jacob. I always love that moment back on the Normandy when Jacob reminds Tali to introduce herself to the AI, EDI. It was actually the other geth that were a challenge. I was expecting to be devastated by the Colossus. I wen through and systematically took out all the enemies mostly keeping out of sight of the Colossus until it was time to confront it. This time around, I forgot about that and I don't have the M920 yet. I'd been playing with maxed characters on insanity for so long, and would just fire a mini-nuke destroying everything. I had forgotten how fun the Colossus fight on Haelstrom could be.
